She doesn't play in those spots because she doesn't know what to do with notes that low or that high. She might think about what it would be like to play, what the keys would feel like under her fingers, how the F below middle C is chipped, how she can feel the dust gathering on the keys three octaves down, where she never plays, or three octaves up, where she also never plays. It's like she's waiting, but she's not even doing that.

The fall sun hits the windows and the blinds at a slant and collapses. The horizontal sheer fabric blinds are down. She always sits, head bowed, at her piano in the late afternoon. A year later, I insisted that my partner Leah plan a trip to NYC that coincided with one of Camille's shows. What happened next is that I got my clock cleaned by a force-of-nature performer. I must've been one of only 25 people in the audience. I'm going." So I bought a ticket and made my way over to the old Irish Arts Center on a cold and blustery fall night.
